On May 25, for the first time in the 2021 season, dormice were caught in the territory of the Zhiguli Elevation (Samara Oblast, Middle Volga Region). They turned out to be three males, two adults already with "passports" and one-year-old. To become grown-up, the young mammal got a tattoo with the number 257and became a "legal citizen" of the reserve. According to the mass of the dormice (132 g and 105 g for grown-ups and 59 g for the yearling), they hibernated successfully, thanks to the abundant harvest of acorns last year.

In Russia, there are four species of dormouse from about twenty-five found on the planet - forest, hazel, garden and edible dormice. These are small, nocturnal herbivorous rodents. They got their name for a very long, up to 9 months and sometimes longer hibernation. The common or river beaver belongs to the beaver family and the rodent order. River beavers are the largest rodents in their family, reaching a length of more than a meter. Adult beavers weigh about 30 kg, but the standard weight ranges from 20 to 25 kg. The most characteristic element of the appearance of the beaver is the tail, which can reach 30 cm in length and 20 cm in width.
