The Zhiguli Reserve preserves the biodiversity of the Zhiguli Mountains — the only mountains of tectonic origin on the Russian Plain. The unique nature of the Zhiguli, the contrasts of the landscapes, and the richness of the subsurface are due to their geological structure, which is sharply different from those of the neighboring sections of the Russian Plain.
